Professor Emeritus Mathematics

Professor Segalla received his PhD in Mathematics Education from UCLA (1973). He taught mathematics in the Coast Community College District and was Associate Dean for Institutional Research and Faculty Development at Golden West College for eight years, conducting administration cost-benefit studies, as well as academic research on, for example, the effect and effectiveness of technology on the teaching-learning process.  In 1969, Segalla was awarded an NSF Faculty Fellowship to the University of Florida, where he earned a master's degree in Operations Research.  

He is presently a tenured professor and Single Subject Advisor in the Mathematics Department at California State University. In his tenure there, he was also the PI and co-PI for two separate NSF grants designed to implement the free-ware computer-based homework program WeBWorK to check and record students’ mathematics homework in mathematics courses at CSULB.  He led WeBWorK workshops for high school mathematics teachers with the goal of, since WeBWorK checks every problem for every student for every assignment, increasing the effectiveness of mathematics homework at the high school level. He has published several research articles gauging the effect WeBWorK has on student learning. 

More recently, Segalla has been involved in the CSU Chancellor Office’s CAPP Professional Development program, offering professional development workshops to help middle and high school teachers transition their teaching methodology to the Common Core standards and mathematical practices.

Segalla sees the work of the MDTP Workgroup as essential to help high school teachers make informed (formative evaluation) decisions when planning and teaching mathematics.
